Young Archie Finalist
Congratulations James!
Peninsula Arts is delighted to announce that one of our young artists, 11 year old James Price, is a finalist in the 2023 Young Archie portrait prize (9-12 year old category) for his wonderfully expressive portrait of his brother titled Lego Builder.
James joined our UPSTART Kids program last year. UPSTART tutor Maxine Pritchard says, “It has been wonderful to see James’ practice grow and be recognised in this way.”
James’ portrait is among 70 finalists chosen from 3400 entries. His artist statement reads, “This is Caleb, my older brother, and this portrait is my way of showing I love him. He is the best Lego builder I know. Plus, he said he would pay me in chocolate if I won.”
According to the Art Gallery of New South Wales, “The adult Archibald Prize for portrait painting is the country’s favourite and most significant art award. Since 1921, it has highlighted figures from all walks of life, from famous faces to local heroes, reflecting back to us the stories of our times.”
The Young Archie, now in its 11th year, is run in conjunction with the adult competition. James and his family travelled to Sydney for the opening of the Archibald Prize exhibition.
From 15 September to 5th November the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery will host the Archibald Prize 2023 Regional Tour. Don’t miss it!
