ART DEMONSTRATIONS 2024

Tina Whiteley

Painting on Fabric

Monday 21 October 1 pm – 3 pm

Cost $10 – includes afternoon tea. Open to non-members. No booking required.

Colourful fabric painting samples with semi-abstract floral themes.

Local Red Hill textile artist, Tina Whiteley specialises in dyeing and printing her own fabrics, threads and papers. She uses a number of different colouring mediums and techniques to create, cards, journals, hand-painted fabric artworks, machine embroidered home décor items and wearable accessories.

For around 15 years she has been working with both natural plant dyes (eco dyes) and synthetic dyes (Procion MX dyes). Both these dye processes require a lot of expertise and knowledge in working with mordants, to ensure ongoing colour fastness and clear, varied colours.

So, when she discovered a product on the market that can transform all sorts of fabrics – including synthetics, like a dye, but is applied like a paint, with no mordant required and no alteration to the original softness of the fabrics, she had to sample it for herself.

Having tried these Liquid Radiance colours, she was hooked on how easy and versatile they are to use and concluded that they are a no-brainer for any textile artist to colour fabrics and fibres to create their own totally unique artwork. She has been instructing and sharing her work with various groups, especially quilters, appliqué artists and doll makers to help them get great results with a much shorter learning curve than with conventional dyes.

In October’s demo, Tina will be telling you more about these amazing paints, showing you how to mix up and apply them to all sorts of fabrics for a range of stunning effects. She will bring samples of hand painted, shibori and batik fabrics and show you how to create wonderful abstract designs using different types of salt and various fabric manipulation techniques. If you’d like to come and see something a little bit different in the world of textile art, then this demo is for you.

This demo will also be of interest to painters wanting to try their hand at painting on fabric; or to mixed media artists who’d like to incorporate fabric into their artworks. Though these paints are designed for fabrics, Tina also uses them on paper to make prints for her digitised cards and papers.
